A while back someone posted a request for best method of removing black streaks from topsides. Cant find it now sooooo ,anyone , what is the best cleaner ?? Guess oxalic acid solution would do it but really wanted something a bit more gentle .

Cheers

Terry

It really depends on what the black streaks are if they are just grime and dirt or the residues of scuffing black rubbing strakes then soap and elbow grease are as good as anything, if persistant then a mild abrasive such as T Cut and again elbow grease. I doubt Oxalic acid will do anything.

I think all the chandlers have sold out of elbow grease by now so you will have to manufacture your own:D

Doesn't need oxalic acid, just needs a decent household cleaner with surfactants in it. You can buy Starbrite Black Streak Remover in chandlers, but it's no better than household cleaners.

Bring back the good old days when we could send someone to ask for elbow grease, bucket of steam, long weight, etc with impunity

Magic Eraser from Robert Dyas or a similiar melamine sponge from a supermarket. No detergent etc just wet it, squeeze it and wipe of those scuffs and streaks. It's brilliant and I'm not on commission (damn it).

Best cleaner ever!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year I started to use Harpic toilet cleaner, it is as good as( if not better) Y10!!!!!!!!
A collegue at my club cleaned a 12" dia circle on my top side using Y10 sayin" There you are you will have to get the rest the same now" well I did using Harpic. Go on have a try you will be amazed.

I've found Starbrite Black Streak Remover to be excellent. I don't normally go for magic chemicals but this stuff seems to do the job. Wipe it on, leave for a few minutes, wipe it off.
Not cheap, but one bottle lasts for years.

Practical Sailor carried out a test of combined cleaner/waxes in 2007. The best product was StarBrite One Step Heavy Duty Cleaner Wax which I have tried for the first time this year. It takes off the black streaks very well and polishes and waxes at the same time.

I bought it from Marine Scene for £19.99 plus P&P. Pricey but saves time.
