Hi,

I'm sitting here at work after a failed attempt to go boating on the weekend. We have a yacht and the diesel has progressively lost power over time and now blows balck smoke when the throttle pushed forward. I believe the prop to be clean and the intake clear. Could a blocked fuel filter cause this? Where should I look first. The engine sounds fine.

here's hoping

Air cleaner first.
You don't say if the engine is turbo charged, if it is the most likely candidate is an air leak between the blower and the manifold. Split hose etc. check the manifold pressure to confirm the turbo is ok.

Fuel filters next.
Then blocked exhaust.
Finaly the injectors & pump.

Compression test if the above don't work.

9 times out of 10 it's too much fuel, not enough air or a bad mix of the 2. So the air cleaner, Turbo charger system and the injectors are usualy somewhere in the frame.

Good luck

Unlikely to be fuel filters, as it's getting too much fuel for the revs/load. I agree with everything else though.

Following recent identical problems with both mine and a friends boat, CHECK the Exhaust Elbow - this entails REMOVING it from the manifold and checking. If the bore is seriously reduced, then this is your problem. Mine was reduced to a contorted hole about 3/8" diameter (from 1½" diameter) and my friends was reduced to ¾" diameter (from 1¼" diameter). Both the elbows had to be renewed as the cast iron had gone rotten. The engines were a Perkins Perama 18HP(same as VP 2020) and a Nanni 14HP.
A blocked primary fuel filter will cause low revs but not black smoke(I replaced my primary filter earlier this year because of this) revs now back to nornal.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Drifting slightly here, was on the way back from Littlehampton to Brighton on Sunday - small fishing vessel, lots of smoke, looked as if on fire. Turned round and went back to have a look thinking possible MayDay here. All exhaust fumes - and big black clouds of the stuff.

Great , thanks all. I'll check all of those things before calling the mechanic. The engine isn't turbocharged, I 've already ran it without airfilter (no better), could therefore be exhaust, injectors or worse then. I made the exhaust myself 6 years ago. water injection point is s/steel pipe welded into thick mild steel exhaust. looks perfect from the outside but it be completely rusted on the inside!

Thanks again

Keep it simple, diesel engines require an adequate supply of clean, air free fuel and they also require an adequate supply of clean air.

Look for anything that may resrict these,

Be careful you dont try. play about and cause other problems also you may buy unneeded parts, know your limitations are you saving money?
