Black & Decker Palm Sander

Evening all,

Does anybody have any views re the above, at 50watt is it powerful enough others claim to be over 100 watt. I only want it for initial surface sanding prior to varnishing,

Do you mean one of those triangular detail sanders? I've got a little no-name one (might be B&Q's own brand or Erbauer or something like that). Don't know what power it is, (I've lent it to someone) but 50 Watts doesn't sound like much. Mine will work well on small areas, but you need something with a big footprint and loads of power for large flat (or very gently curved) areas to get a decent removal rate.

that sounds like a "Mouse" light duty detail sander

Ok for small areas or intricate work perhaps but you dont say what sort of size job you have in mind,

For large areas I think I'd be looking at the 110watt model or if you dont actually need a detail sander one of the quarter sheet palm sanders.

my Bosch detail sander is 180 watts but its not a palm sander style and is fairly heavy... (a bit too heavy)

I also have a 1/3 sheet sander. I think Id rather have a 1/4 sheet palm sander but they were rather expensive when I bought the 1/3 sheet one.

Yes it is one of those triangular jobbies. Must admit I'm cautious re only 5o0 watt. Is it man enough to do what is asked of it.

we had one, I presume a 50 watt job; it was surprisingly useful, snag was it didn't last long !

As long as not too expensive I'd go for it, just keep the receipt...

I've got a Macalister 120w triangular one from B and Q. Its very useful but I've had to exchange it due to the Velcro malfunctioning and shedding the sanding sheets.

I noticed a Makita one in wickes for £60 ish. Axminster are probably cheaper. I pretty much only buy makita kit now. They have a 3 year warranty.

Had a look at the B&D sander and wasn't really impressed. After lots of research, which was pretty inconclusive, I decided to go mid-price with the Erbauer. It seems solidly built and is definitely powerful enough. Longevity? Who knows.
