Black box

My boat is equipped with Stowe Navigator instruments for wind speed and angle, depth and log plus a depth repeater at the chart table. I have had to rewire all the electrics due to corrosion etc. On doing the Stowe instruments, I found more wires that are really necessary. They are associated with power for the instruments and their illumination and originate at a black box. It has no makers names on it. It has 5 connections marked Power, INST, SAIL, SAIL and ???. I can get all the instruments without using any of these wires!

Has anyone any idea what this black box does.

Are you sure that the box is associated with the instruments only? Could it be input power, instrument lights, nav lights for sailing, nav lights under engine, and anchor light (or some similar combination)?
