Cor blimey what is it with this place?? I had the misfortune to have to nip over there this morning to collect a part, and now I'm proper cross. It took an hour to get through Island Street and the town centre, due, mostly, to about 450 enormous silver estate cars divulging blonde halfwits, clutching surfboards, hampers and matching sets of bloody labradors. And why are these cars always silver? And so big?
I know it's not the town's fault that it's probably too pretty for it's own good, but it's become like a little microcosm of irritating non-reality in what is otherwise a very nice part of the world. I'm not going there in August ever again; roll on September!!

Surfboards? strange place to go surfing, especially in August!
I'm glad Salcombe is there - If it wasn't for Salcombe, all those big silver cars would be where it's really nice!

Well Will... what part can you only get in Salcombe? Or are are we to assume the missing part was in one of those smart boutiques?

It's just as bad by water. Just back from spending the night there and our run ashore last night was a pain, every eating place was bulging, queue down the street for the chippy and as you say an endless stream of yummy mummies in their silver Range Rovers. Fortunately we knew what to expect so had provisions to eat on board. One good thing was freshly-baked croissants for breakfast though again it was queuing down the street at the bakery.

We were lucky to get a buoy. If someone hadn't owed us a favour it would have been a case of push off elsewhere matey.

Go to Dartmouth, take the lower ferry to Kingswear and park directly outside the swindlery, OR, go to Dartmouth, take the upper ferry and stop off at Noss, or go straight to Dartside Quay at Galmpton. All officially Very Helpful Chaps. Don't stop in Dartmouth, another living hell by car & the swindlery is a miserable type. As for Salcombe, I'm glad I don't fit in, yah. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can't avoid Salcombe; got friends there and SWMBO used to waitress in a grotty hotel that's now posh. Prefer to anchor up at Frogmore Creek. They still charge you, but not the £19 we had to pay for a buoy. I enjoy watching the visitors though - I always enjoy animals.

Have found Salcombe to be generally OK. True, I felt a little bit inadequate as my boat is only 27ft and my name isn't Tarquin. My major gripe is the total lack of any rules governing the coming and going of dinghies around the harbour. Was there about 5 weeks ago, lined up to pick up one of their moorings in strongish wind - just about 8 foot away and WHOOSH!!!!! a bl**dy sailing dinghy goes between the bow and the mooring buoy! Probably piloted by some idiot called Tarquin!! Needless to say we nearly ran him over by accident, and when I got my breath back nearly decided to run the ignorant bu**er over on purpose!! Had similar on entry at the bar where a speedboat decided to drop the occupants of its towed rubber dougnut right infront of us!! Salcombe does seem to be a bit of a playground for the rich and ignorant!!!

Hmm. Isn't that what Starehole Bay is for? A quiet anchorage? Brilliant if the weather's stable and you don't need the town. I avoid Salcombe and Dartmouth in August anyway, its such a scrum - but then again, so is everywhere else! Options tend to be a bit limited around devon anyway.

Shurrup, don't tell everyone, that's my spot too - we will have the whole Birmingham Navy up there if they think it's a good place to anchor ! Pub does very good food too, if there's enough water to get up there.

London yuppies and collision regs do not go together.

I was there at one time waiting in queue for Fortesques when senior waitress came down saying bl....y whingeing viitors. They were no doubt not wishing to put up with the mega expensive poorly served and presented food.

Bring your own ( the wine is cheaper) sit and enjoy the fab views.
