Bits in my OIL!!!

Started to get a bit excited!! Found the boat, Did the survey, got the dosh, arranged the boat transfer and training, nearly sorted the berth. all set to complete next week. Just got results from oil analisys. I've got bits in my oil and sugests compression tests and more investigation. I've now got another engineer doing the engine tests on Thursday and should get a report on Friday.
Am I worrying about nothing? should I be looking for a new boat? Is this common? Should I go back to flying? any thoughts?

An oil survey on a boat I was thinking about buying recently saved me about £35k of engine repairs so it is definitely worth doing and definitely worth following the advice of whoever is doing it
However it is vital to relate the amount of contamination in the oil to the number of engine hours that have occured since the oil was changed. Obviously, if the oil is fresh then the contamination may be light even if there are problems so be a bit suspicious if the engines have had an oil change just before the boat was put on the market especially if it's mid season
Have a chat to whoever has done the sampling and make sure he knows how old the oil is and how many engine hours have been done. If there's any doubt in his mind or yours, walk away from the boat. There are plenty of others on the market

More information needed.
1 How was the sample taken? A sample taken from the bottom of the sump or out of the filter bowl ie. the dirty side of an oil filter from most engines will produce bits.

2. Some engine history, when serviced how long since filter change, what condition are the filters in.

3 Whats is meant by bits, can the person who did the analysis be a bit more specific, bits of gasket or gasket cement could be considered a natural by product, bits of swarf and casting sand also on a new engine, but signs of non ferrous (bearing material) could be something to get worried about.

What size are these bits, if the sample is out of the sump before the filter, good filters should clean up down to about 40 microns.

The survey was carried out by Shelle-quip and the samples were taken by the surveying engineer, the cost was about 50 euro per engine, and the resulting report very comprehensive detailing not only the oil condition but also the contents (ppm) for 20+ components inc water & diesel
Recommendations about engine wear to the upper or lower portions of the block, gasket condition. and also further action.
As a result I have a MAN engineer doing compression tests as Shelle-quip think I may have a bust piston ring!!!
I'll let you know more when I get his report on Friday.
