Bit of first boat advice please.

I've only spoken to a couple of engineers about it at the moment and they say it's quite common and shouldn't worry too much, obviously get a proper engine and leg report before buying. But I just wanted to see if anyone on here has any experience of it.

It is quite common although its usually the bottom of the skeg. The main thing to get checked it that there a no cracks in the casing caused by the impact that broke the chunk off.

If it's mercruiser I'd put money on it that if it is the anti cavitation plate it was caused seperating the gearbox to do a water impeller service / change. Sometimes the upper and lower do not seperate easily. The trick is to keep loosening the nuts even though they are binding against the ridge on the bottom of the gearbox forcing the two units apart enough to get a wedge in and pry loose. Uninnitiated take a soft mallet and try to tap them apart. It does not take much to couse them to crack off like that being rather brittle. It should be fine but a good negotiating point in driving the price down.
