Somebody in the Fairey Owners Club described the phenomena of 'deferred maintenance', in other words, jobs that were long overdue. It struck me that if I wanted to be able to consider Playtime properly looked after that there shouldn't be anything 'deferred'...

With that in mind...

Topsides needed to go back to bare wood.

With undercoat and extraordinarily expensive easy sand epoxy filler.

Transom on its way back to bare wood, surveyor recommended this 18 months back, pleasingly all sound underneath.

More undercoating, in fact this is the last undercoat and contains about 25% top coat (nice trick to get good covarage)

How do you lift and shift the engines to get the shaft alignment spot on? Find some chunky timbers in the yard, borrow an antique and incredibly heavy chain block from a chum and...

Running hopelessly late this year, due to spend a week onboard starting 23rd May. Erk.

Ben all piece of p1ss, stop yr whining and get on with it! :):)

PS Rather you than me, I thought sanding and epoxying a Grp hull was bad enough, there's a Fairey a few boats along which is having a major overhaul.

BB,

confused, I thought you repainted everything a couple of years ago, or was it only top sides?
What easysand epoxy filler did you use? I was recommended adding microbaloons (or microbubles whatever) to my normal epoxy for easy sanding as when I thicken epoxy with microfibers or even worse silica it's a right pain to sand! Problem is that microballons are almost 20euro a litre!!!

is the top coat and undercoat sprayed on, or painted with a roller?

looks good nevertheless!

cheers

I did do the topsides 2 years ago, but I wanted a better finish, I wish I hadn't started...

Will wet flatted with 400 grade then brush and tipped off with a brush. I'll admit defeat at this point, I have an old chum who is an old school coach painter, he's coming Sunday morning to tip off the top coat while I run ahead laying on.

Nautix Blue filler http://www.marineware.com/index.php...autix-bluefiller&catid=131:fillers&Itemid=131

Likewise, ballons and epoxy is hard work.

20 euro for microballons is cheap compared to this stuff, you get what you pay for.

how about having someone video the process as I'm desparaterly trying to avoid covering all boats around us with big sheets of plastic in order to spray paint MiToS. Was thinking of brushing on this year, see how it goes and what problems apear over the next couple of years and then do a highquality paint job with guns and sheets and lots of masking...

cheers

Yes , two man job, roller closely followed by a brush lay off easiest way unless you are one of the few really skilled painters. Then in five years, refill any scrapes, dents, damage,a gentle wet and dry all over, and freshen up with a nice bright new top coat.:encouragement:Just think Ben if you went GRP you would have to polish the darn thing twice a year, now that IS hard smelly work!

A jobs list that peaked at over 40 is now down to 12, some of which need to be done afloat.

Excuse the boxes of tools in the cockpit.

The covers over the fuel tank vents had many many coats of paint over them are were bashed and dented. I didn't want the style of ones available in the chandlery, I wanted to refit the original Fairey ones. In truth, probably made by Simpson Lawrence or some such. The first chrome plating company promised they could do it in a week, after a week they said the queue for polishing was 6 weeks, despite the job being very small the man wouldn't queue jump my job.

So I drove to Brighton one lunchtime, collected them, tore him off a strip for messing me about and drove back to work getting flashed by a camera in the process.

A chum came to the rescue and recommended a chap. He bashed the dents out, polished, nickel plated, repeat a couple of times, then finally chromed. All for £20 in 3 days. Ask me if you need details.

All redundant skin fittings have been plugged with wooden bungs and remaining skin fittings renewed.

Lots of cleaning and a few thouch ups required, may launch tomorrow.
