Birthday Approaches I - Genie\'s House

Mum and Dad wonder what I'd like for my birthday. I do too - I can think of lots of things, but in view of a little neglect last year, I promised this year to Crystal. 9 coats of Coelan will grace her exterior brightwork before she emerges onto the Thames for the Frostbite, or I'll be damned.

Thing is, parents sort of like to buy you something nice, that you can look at and think "Ah, that was from Mum and Dad". 3 litres of Coelan probably isn't what they had in mind.

So how about this baby?

About 90 quid from Classic Marine, in the right price range, and they'll like buying it. It would be fastened semi-permanently (I think) above the saloon table. Does anyone have any experience with suspended oil lamps? Do they downlight reasonably well? Any other worries?

Any advice much appreciated. I do have another idea, however, one that probably makes more sense... see part 2...

Well, it would certainly be cheaper!

I seem to remember that Miranda had one, when Kit Hughes owned her. There is a problem with it swinging about at sea so it needs to be stabilised with some shock cord etc. Rather spoils the appearance.
