With the cost of to Red fuel now and maybe in the future how about making your own. There is a load of information on making Biodiesel on the web. All you need is a supply of old cooking oil. Works out at abou 10p/l
Any one tried it yet?

Trouble is your boat will smell like a chip shop! It is bad enough with the munchies brought on by the clean air and exercise of sailing, let alone having to smell chips! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Someone on the Normanboatappreciationsociety forum makes it. Says it costs about 30p a litre to make in small quantities.

Have a look at his photos.

I know someone who looked into it as road fuel. Unless you're making pretty large quantities, the economics don't really work out - well, not if you're going to be honest and tell HM customs & excise about it anyway! Apparently there's a form you can ask for where you tell them how much you've used and they send you a bill as appropriate. If they stop boats using red diesel, then I imagine duty will be payable on biodiesel just the same as it (should be) for cars. I've also heard about various concerns relating to engine longevity -particularly the high pressure pump. Apparently it ought to be mixed with ordinary diesel but I couldn't get any agreement on ratios.
