When out on the waves what spec of bins are recommended?

Is zoom useful?

I presume waterproof / floating is a good thing.

Is power better than wide angle?

etc etc

7x50 is the usual marine spec, and an integral compass is handy.

Zoom is not useful. The Compass ones get a lot of praise for £99, a floating neck strap is a good idea. After that the sky is the limit! I have Steiners, but I did not pay for them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

have a think what you actually need them for.. I think the idea is mainly for bouy identification. Do you do much of that?!

I 2nd (or was that 3rd'ed) the compass ones, perfect for the usual ad hoc use. Rather than spending many hundreds on a single pair I would rather buy 2 ok compass ones, in my opinion 2 people looking with 2 bins are more likly than one person with an expensive set to spot what u are looking for, esp on a pitching boat!

Something to consider is the movement you experience on a small boat.

7x50 are the ideal for all round day/night use but might be too powerful to hold steady on a small craft.

Perhaps 6x30 may prove more useful there.

I cannot comment of the compass ones as I have not used them.

Thanks for the comments / observations. I take the point about movement on a small boat. Medium power and wide angle I think.

Cheers
