Hi, I have just aquired an old Sestrel compass which I would like to mount in a small (8" x 6"diameter ) wooden binnacle. Has anybody got a photo or idea on how to make one please?
My old ketch had one which was demountable for safe-keeping, The compass was mounted in a turned wooden bowl which in turn was mounted on a wooden post. I bought a copper spherical cistern float from the plumber's supplies; the last one they had. They are all plastic nowadays. My intention was to separate the two halves and use one for the binnacle cover, with a suitable elliptical viewing hole cut in it. I also planned to mount red LEDs around the inside of the cover to illuminate the compass at night. All of this is now with the boat's new owner.
Peter.

A binnacle is a case or box on the deck of a ship, generally mounted in front of the helmsman, in which navigational instruments are placed for easy and quick reference. This has a rosewood veneer pillar and looks magnificent against a timber or brick backdrop.
