Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

...............or at least smell like it. Never had it before.

Bounced around in the breeze a bit this weekend and now bilges smell like death; a bit like the Hydrogen Sulphide which sometimes emanates from the heads - but much, much worse.

Tired Bilgex, flush, pump out, Bilgex flush pump out. Didnt half stink.
Left Bilgex in it with some water.

Will it work? Anyone got a patent remedy?

(New boat not an option - although that was SHMBO's solution).

D'ya've a gd weekend?

Suspect it's congealed muck, had thus once, only waqy was lots of Bilgex plus rag on the end of a stick to stir it all up. Worked in the end!

Re: Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

Daz, not just any old washing powder, but Daz. Don't ask me why it works better than any other in bilges, but it does. Two buckets of HOT water and daz, bung it in the bilges leave or go out and let it roll about, pump it out and flush again, pump out and apply bilgex! You can add some dettol aswell, which will kill off any bacteria causing nasty niffs! It works honest, "been there done that"! Had an exploding tiolet, you can imagine what went in my bilges and lots of it!

Re: Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

interesting comment. i've found that clothes washing liquid detergent is also very effective at cleaning decks.

Maybe not the nicest analogy? But good to see that freedom of speech rules on YBW!

Re: Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

Not your batteries gassing? could be that.

Re: Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

it could indeed be the batteries gassing. Happened to me once, one of the banks was completely "cooked", and it causes a horrible smell. Took me a while to find out what it was, though.

Not batteries. Batteries not been charged for three weeks. Thanks for the idea though.

I use Daz (called Dash in spain) on the decks aswell, not scrubbing, but just a weekly swab down on the teak, you should see the crap that comes off. Industrial pollution?

Re: Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

No its probably just another layer of teak gone - should be through fairly soon now!!
My bilges used to smell like a whores drawers and it took a steam clean and repaint to cure

Its ok, I still have about 3/4" to go! then it's 1" of marine ply after that. I do have to deepen some screws (about ten) and replug though, but I've been meaning to do that for about 7 years!

Re: Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

Wouldn't use an Aerial for my undies, but might use Ariel, it goes into the washing machine easier.

Re: Bilges like a Tart\'s Handkerchief

Whore's Draws? I got beaten up for a Tart's Handkerchief!

Gets the point over though.

Anyone else got any [good] ideas?
