Does anyone have first hand experience of in-line filters that you fit between your bilge pump and the overboard fitting? I keep my boat in a U.S. marina and live in fear of my automatic bilge pump starting up and spewing oily bilge water, causing a sheen on the water which would result in a heavy fine. Of course, there is no oil in my bilge water, but I still have that nagging fear.
I'm interested in how effective they are and to what extent they inhibit the performance of the pump.

I've heard good things about these guys, a local distributer in Dublin seems to be doing great trade in their products and they're based in the states so I'm sure they could help you out?

Hi John

How about fitting an oil absorbant pillow in your bilge? - This should attract the oil, leaving "clean" water to be pumped out over the side.

Ive just fitted a " BioSok into our Bilge (a freeby my wife was given at the London Boat Show) - I'll let you know how well it works!

Hi Jools,
I use absorbent pads and they work well. It just struck me as a sensible idea to have an in-line filter in case of a catastrophic incident such as a fuel spill in the bilge. The Centek device noted by Dyflin looks interesting and I'll check it out.
