Bilge pump bother

I have taken my Whale Gusher Mk 2 apart about twenty times, cleaned it, renewed the seals (25 quid) and still it will not self prime. If I put my hand over the outlet it will prime and pump, so I guess it must be a problem with the outlet side; am I right?
I would never guess these things are so fragile....would even a tiny air leak on the output side cause all this bother?
Help this is driving me nuts. I hope to launch next week: new pump £135 (!)

some of these depend on a non-return valve at the end of the inlet pipe.

Check for corrosion...

My Gusher stopped priming properly and I found there was corrosion inside where the seals seat on to the alloy body. Cleaned the corrosion off and painted over the bare metal and it worked fine.
