Interesting pictures, but no doubt the story isn't as straight forward as it seems...

I would imagine it is that straight forward, having spent a lot of time Marlin fishing in Gran Canaria on a friends 48ft sports fisher it's easy to imagine how easily you can swamp a boat by running too hard astern, the squared off transom don't half push up a wall of water when going anything more than a couple of knots!
Hence slip and give it a large handfull and yup party over!
