Re: Big Bulker on the beach in Aussie pix

Just been speaking to a colleague who's mum lives in New South Wales - the storm that has hit is one of the worst in living memory and has sadly taken a number of lives - some families have been drowned in a terrible deluge with cars being swept away like toys.
Whole communitias are isolated and the emergency services are unable to respond in several areas.
The wind has taken roofs off and power is out in many areas, and the storm is not showing much sign of abating.
My thoughts and prayers are with those families who have suffered - I just hope it blows out without any more tragedy.

Newcastle is a _big_ bulker port. I never managed to get that far on the bulkies, but it's one of the biggest coal ports in the world AFAIK. There is a big anchorage for ships awaiting for their berth to clear and I believe this ship was at anchor waiting her turn. From what I understand there were 60 ships in the anchorage and the HM told them to head out to sea but some didn't heed the advice including this ship. Probably tried when it was too late...

The ship is Japanese owned and chartered to Lauritzen who in turn have re-chartered it to another Japanese company.

In one way they are lucky as some much bigger bulkies call in to Newcastle and it could have been worse.

big Tugs

Not sure of the shoreline there.

Looks to me as if a refloat on Spring HW and some maga bollard tow tugs could do the biz without the razor blades bit.

Just shows in many respects how lucky MSC Napoli grounding was in Lyme Bay - good weather etc and wonderfully brave decision making there IMHO.
