Big brother is watching you!

I used to keep our boat on a mooring in an isolated river near Cardiff. The amount of crime and vandalism we suffered as a club was disheartening. Some people after having their boats raided more than once would sell up and give up boating alltogether.

At one time we set up our own security watch taking it in turns to do a night watch. This idea worked for a while but with limited numbers taking part it wasnt sustainable in the long run.

With the technology available now a few webcams could be monitored from the comfort of your home.

Yeh: like neighborhood watch anyone who looks "out of place" will be suspect. Anti-social behavior, i.e. anyone behaving not quite like us, will be suspect.

None of this is a substitute for careful, high-grade, through and constitutional policing - aiming to catch actual perpetrators of crimes that have actually occurred, rather than those some busy body thinks is likely to occur.

Yes, it could be a "curtain twitcher's charter", but also volunteers for the much vaunted Ladyman's "maritime officers". Not sure if it will actually deter anything, though. Usually, the best deterrent is havving a CCTV camera pointed directly at your boat, whether the CCTV is working or not. I find a slowly blinking red LED on the camera box convinces most troublemakers to stay away.

So you see something suspicious. What then? Ring dibble who turns up (if at all) 2 days later. Likely dismisses recorded video as useless in court.

The answer isnt really in our hands. Its a problem of the ineffectiveness of the legal system

Here in finland it seems to be a common part of club membership that you commit to doing a night or two on watch duty each summer. From mid april to mid october there is someone on duty at our club almost every night (and the two neighbouring clubs also).

I quite enjoy it when I do it mid summer as the hours of darkness are quite short and you can get things done around the boat. wouldnt fancy it much in early october though - too cold and dark and more than 1/2 boats are on the hard standing.
