Coming back to Chichester yesterday (HW-3) in SW25 knots there were some quite big breakers out in Hayling Bay. Haven't seen these for many years and wondered why today?

I usually follow a lat of 50deg 46min to round the W Pole on E'ly heading and have often been in similiar conditions without seeing these breakers. Any ideas?

I saw the same the Sunday before last - and that was in a NW wind! (Big long swell coming in from the south too) Must be where the gravel has shifted through the winter - remember they dumped the dredgings from the bar in Hayling bay last year.

Were the usual surfers there?

from a distance inside the harbour, it always looks as if they'll get swept onto the first breakwater, but when you get close,it's clear they stop well before it.

Even in calmish weather they manage to surf on the western corner of the entrance.

Interesting - friend of mine was out when you describe and just told me he saw the same thing. Think I'll give it a bit more offing in a blow, or go through the forts instead of the dolphin.

Bit of an own-goal if it's dredgings dumped there causing it. Can imagine it would be quite uncomfortable in a small boat.

Don't think the surfers would agree its was an own goal, more like golden goal!

Didn't see any surfers. The seas were breaking quite heavily at Langstone also so conditions looked v good for them.
