\"beyond economic repair\" (slightly boaty)

ever heard that dreaded phrase from a repairer. generally followed by "let me show you our new models"?

i took my lawnmower to the local agent because it wouldn't propel itself along. "sorry sir, the drive mechanism is old and rusted up, a new unit will cost £130".

i opted to take it home and push it until it died to postpone the outlay on a new one. i thought i'd have a look at it today so stripped down the drive where i found that a couple of ratchet pawls had plastic blade springs that had lost their tension. a quick clean up and application of a heat gun to bend them back into shape and bingo, it goes again.

now swmbo can do the mowing again while i go sailing /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I love beyond economic repair, thats when I buy them (whatever!) usually. Boats mainly.
Of course the establishments I frequesnt would never call you Sir, damn lucky if they call you Mate.
And their expression for 'Beyond Economic Repair' is ' Totally Donald Ducked Moosh!'

Bring your heat gun and bender round, you can fix the clutch on me kit car then...... Its worth a glass of claret or two.

Wahey....... Jim and I have spent the last few days discussing this very subject via PM's......

It seems that sailing is extremely compatible with kit cars (or component cars as I believe they like to be called nowadays)......

If you have the skills to keep a leaky old bucket on the water, then a 1970's plastic beasty on 4 wheels presents no challenge at all...

So Snowleopard cough.. up... what 'av yer got....?

I've had or helped build along the way a couple of 7 replicas... one with a 3.5L V8 in it!... and a morgan replica..... along with the uual list of no hope production cars, from Hillman Imp, through Mk1 Ford Escort to MGB

Currently, I have a classic Porsche sat in the garage (1987 911 Carerra Cabriolet)... but its for sale to help pay for the boat i've just bought!

I'll leave Jim to list his toys... its quite a long list!

Mine is a cream Dutton Melos with a Pinto 2 litre, registered as a 1969 Escort, so no tax.
Looks like Noddy & Big Ears car, and has lift off oversteer on roundabouts at under 30MPH! Cost a grand, worth a grand. Marvellous!
Have built others, inc Lotus 7 , Westfield, Jago Model A, and a 3.4 V6 Anglia. NAS has a similarly impressive list of moneypits.
have left it this year, as the new boat has taken priority. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Also sometime biker, but thats another story.....

Jim,
who will fit his own kit to his boat and be damned at the cost. Yards eh! Who needs 'em! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
