Just a recap:

My Beta 28hp used to chew up the v-belt and make much black dust. After reading here that Beta now fit a polyVee belt, I got the kit from Beta (orrible price, but...) and fitted it last winter.

The results are everything that I had hoped for. The belt does NOT keep losing tension with little use, no dust and little** signs of wear.

** The belt shows a little edge-wear, and this is probably due to my not following instructions carefully enough. It is important to completely clean the original crankshaft pulley before fitting the over-pulley, if not it will rotate with a little eccentricity. I was in a hurry, noticed it wasnt quite perfect and called it a day, I will be refitting that pulley this winter.

Me Too

Had the same experience with a Beta 13.5hp. It used to eat the original vee belts & cover everything in black dust. A couple of years ago I fitted a larger alternator, and, at the suggestion of Beta Marine, fitted a polyvee belt.

Two years on, no sign of dust, and still running on the original belt, which looks as good as new. I think the original vee belt may have been a little under specified.

Beta Marine's technical guys were very helpful throughout.

Re: Me Too

If you are having trouble with "official" V belts, go to a good belt supplier and get them to measure it and provide an industrial belt, which will cost less and last 10 times as long.
If the new belt starts to shred, then the pulleys are out of alignment, which is a manufacturers problem

Re: Me Too

If you had read my post, you would see that I was no longer looking for a solution. I am sure your suggestion was well-meant, but I had explored all the obvious avenues. The problem was indeed a manufacturers problem, but they do not offer an upgrade on engines over 8 years old. This is a report on upgrading to fix the problem. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I am in the process to order a new Beta engine (28 hp - 1005 model) and would of course not like to miss the improved belt system.
Has the "polyVee belt kit" a name, or ordering ref.?

Thanks a lot for the valuable info.

Paul

AFAIK, the new engines come fitted with the new polyvee belt arrangement (lucky s0d!). You might check it is not an option but standard. My engine is the BD1005 as well, goes and goes and goes. THe only trouble other than the original belt was in the starter solenoid or starter motor sticking. Not sure which. I am currently having to give it a bang with a piece of wood occasionally, but must get it sorted properly. My engine is 10years old, so you can start worrying in 2016!!

Thanks for the info,
but ... it seems there is a lot of uncertainty about the PolyVee stuff!
The local Beta dealer here in Mallorca doesn't know anything about PolyVee,
Beta Marine UK contacted by phone made me an (verbal) offer to install the PolyVee system on the engine (BD1005) at a price of "around €120.-",
According to Beta Marine US Ltd, PolyVee is only an option on the BD 1005 engine if a stronger alternator is requested (70A or 100A rather than the standard 65A)

The whole smells fishy!

Of course, I am willing to pay an additional €100- or 150.- for a reall improvement!
Is this what you call "horrible price"?
What is the physical difference between the standard belt (and maybe pulleys) and the PolyVee?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Paul

OK, understand your confusion. First, Beta Marine is a UK company, agents in Europe and US. So, theoretically, UK is place to talk to.

Second, tho generally good on spares and stuff, they can be a bit iffy on the phone. It seems I was wrong, and the Polyvee is an option. If factory fitted for around €120, you are doing well, as I paid £140+VAT.

I changed mine to the polyvee as I didnt want to have a lot of nasty black dust accumulating in the plane of the belt path. On the other hand, one could buy a lot of belts for £140 or even €120! The belt stays nice and tight.

On the Rustler web site, there were a number of people who reported the same nuisance with the Beta engine (fitted as standard), and a few like me who changed and were very pleased.

The difference: the standard v belt like standard motor fan belt on most older cars. runs in a pulley made from two discs bolted together. The polyvee is a flat belt, with a v-grooved internal surface, about 5 to 7 grooves, each about 3mm high, and they run on machined pulleys.

Just as a thought, I'm running a toothed (i.e. "timing" type belt) on my alternator at present to combat the same problem (black dust). I wonder why these aren't used more often as original equipment?

After fitting a solar panel to my boat the black dust problem really reduced. Batteries are always fully charged when I go down to it so I guess the alternator doesn't work so hard.

Just realised how old this thread was I dragged up :D

That's what happens when you search by title. You're not to know that it brings up threads that were sitting on page 4500(approx) of the forum.
