On our return from Alderney on Sunday, our 5-year-old Beta 13.5 hp twin stopped suddenly in the middle of the Eastbound shipping lane with a ship heading towards us. Fortunately we were motorsailing and had enough wind to keep clear. The stoppage was instant and without warning - no blurbing or coughing. After several attempts it restarted, ran for several minutes and then stopped suddenly and without warning again. This nightmare continued right across to Weymouth with an estimated 40 difficult restarts and the engine then running smoothly for between 2 and 25 minutes each time - the average was about 4.5 minutes. We're pretty sure it wasn't a fuel problem. The engine has been regularly professionally maintained. Anyone got any ideas?

We ad a similar problem with a beta, after we had fitted it, speak to beta, there was a known fault, with something to do with the electrical side of the fuel pump or somethiong similar, I can't remember, now.

Could also be the tank vent that's plugged up. Disconnect it at the tank and use an air pump (the Avon inflatable pump does wonders in such case) to clear it out.

First port of call I would suggest is Beta themselves. On the rare occassions that I have had to contact them, I have found them to be exceptionally helpful. From the symptoms you are describing, it does sound like a possible problem with the tank breather...it may well be worth your while having a quick check to make sure that it is clear.

Endy
