The DIY solution may be Tinytach, that was mentioned this spring. Not really DIY, but supposed to be fairly simple to fit. I wouldn't know, as I bought one and am still trying to figure out a place to locate it and a way to lead the wires that will not result in leaks.
Other solutions have mainly been based on bike computers, fitting the magnetic pickup close to an accessible rotating part (to which you attach a magnet) and adjusting the wheel diameter setting so that the display gives something that can be interpreted as RPM. I did think of trying one of these (they are a LOT cheaper) but am not really that practical. I could see problems in attaching the magnet to the front pulley so that it did not fly off, and getting a rigid position for the pick-up that put it within 3mm of the magnet at closest point. So I put it on my bike instead!
Having bought a magnetic rev counter and then realised that a dial read out for a 1850rpm engine on a 8000 rev dial is useless.found bought and fitted a tiny tach.50 odd quid and a 5 year or so battery life.At £10 a year its worthit..
The Beta uses the "W" connector on the alternator for its tacho feed. Easy to install. They use a VDO model that has an hourmeter as well and costs about £100. Ive fitted quite a few and tehy work well.
I can't see how the speed of the alternator can show engine speed. It would depend on the pulley sizes, would it not? Or is this already calibrated in?
Says he who has just fitted new pulleys!
BTW,they sent me the wrong size of belt, but I phoned them and they have sent me the (supposedly) correct one. I hope to get up at the weekend to see if it fits!
I got mine from tinytach.co.uk, nice chap, very helpfull, it works a treat on my Honda 8 hp outboard, be sure to tell him how many cylinders AND whether it's a 360 or 180 degree twin (if it's a twin, of course!).
TinyTach do different versions of their tacho - one version for petrol engines (including OB's) and another version for diesel engines. The diesel version is so easy to fit it truely is DIY. (Anyone who cannot fit one should not IMHO own a boat let alone be let out with out a "minder" / nurse)
BTW, the "5 year" battery can be replaced or so I am reliably informed.
