Hi,

I've just been idly checking out the price of chain and received a shock

Can anyone tell me the best UK source for calibrated galvanised chain (8 or 10mm) ? I'm phrasing it like that intentionally because obviously I need it to be good as well as cheap (if both are attainable at once).

Thanks,

Boo2

I bought my anchor chain from Boat Gear Direct (a trading division of EYE Marine Limited who make a lot of mooring equipment). It was calibrated and tested Italian made Grade 40 chain. It was good quality but you will probably find cheaper poorer quality chain elsewhere.

I think there is a bit of a myth about calibrated chain.
A couple of years ago I bought some chain from a well known supplier.
I asked what the difference was between calibrated chain and non-calibrated.
Their response was that they supply exactly the same chain.
The only difference was that the extra cost covered the cost to themselves for collecting and delivery another set of chain should the first jump off the windlass.

i always use these people good service

Also used them before but not for chain which they do sell through ebay. At the moment 10% off galvanised, calibrated chain, e.g. 30M £110 freepost. As we all tend to say nowadays, it probably comes out of the same factory as all the other chain so there's probably a case for just buying the cheapest chain you can find unless it can be proven to be better quality???

I believe Bradneys provide a certificate of compliance with their chain meaning that the strength is guaranteed. I don't think you would get the same from ebay

I bought calibrated 8mm chain from Bradney and some of the links are rusting already after only one season's use. I was only supplied with a copy of their test proof report on a batch sample so not too sure about my actual chain. Also chain is from China. I bought from them as I thought I was buying UK chain but to be fair their website info is quite open about the source of some of their chain, which I only saw after buying. Chain was very cheap.

I went into this some time ago. I read alot of stuff ( but forgotton most of it) I thought there were some distinct grades ( of steel used) which, in effect, related to breaking strain. You dont seemto see these grades or the breaking strain reffered to in most adds so it's very hard to compare like for like.
Loike others though I tend to buy cheap where there is nothing to recommend otherwise.
In my case I had mine regalvanised.... less that half the cost and ( I am assured) more zinc applied than from new.

We wanted European made 3/8" calibrated chain. After a lot of research we settled on Jimmy Green as the supplier. The chain came from a foundry in France. Cannot remember the name of the lady at Jimmy Green but she was extremely helpful and the price was competitive.

I guess THIS is Chinese made. Does the team think it is a goer or a false economy. Certainly the cheapest I've managed to find so far.

How do they work the postage out?
Does CALIBRATED weigh less than UN-CALIBRATED:confused:
40 MTRS OF 8MM SHORT LINK CALIBRATED ANCHOR CHAIN GALV £211.99
Postage:+£25.00
40 MTRS OF 8MM SHORT LINK ANCHOR CHAIN GALVANISED £106.00
Postage:+£35.00

and me always got a good deal

Just about to buy a mooring warp off them-appear really competitive.
I also thing that if you read between the lines whether eyeco at Levington nr. Felixstowe or Yacht Rigging Supplies at Grimsby-you are dealing with businesses who are based in commercial ports and probably have their origins in commercial marine.

Bradney Chains have a significant reputation for service and sound advice.

That's partly due to their MD, Chris Wiggins, who is always willing to advise yotties who ask.... < chris@bradneychain.co.uk >

The original query was concerning chain from Bradney. I've always viewed them as the most reliable supplier. If their is a problem with chain they have supplied, I would contact them with the concern and I'm sure they will treat the problem sympathetically.

securefixdirect.com

On another recent thread these people were mentioned: http://www.securefixdirect.com/chain-241-c.asp

They seem about cheapest on net. Anyone used them? Is their Chinese made chain any worse than any other Chinese made chain? Accepted Grade 40 is better, but Grade 30 is as strong as SS (according to the charts) so do I need better for 28ft yacht (using 8mm)? Has anyone had a cheap chain break?

I would always ask for some sort of certificate.
