I'm assuming that from now to about February, people are not thinking about buying a boat. I don't want an ad sitting in PBO for several months looking familiar and sad ...
Do people agree that February onwards is probably best?
And any other selling advice welcome - especially as she is currently in France, near Bordeaux.

But also remember that there is a fair lead time of a couple of months if you are placing an ad in PBO/YM/ST etc.

I note that the boat is in Bordeaux. I'm sure that you'll find that you would sell much quicker and for a better price if the boat is in the UK and available to be seen. I'm also based in France and several friends have taken boats home at the end of the season to sell them rather than try in France - some sailing and some by lorry. Certainly that's what I would do, particularly if it's a British make of boat.

That\'s the generally perceived wisdom, but, ....

there are, of course, many instances where boats sell over the winter months.

I've bought, and sold, at such times on several occasions.

Why not try boatsandoutboards and appolloduck: they're free and they work!

By recommed would be get her back to the UK and get her on wih a decent broker, perphaps one that will offer you discounted mooring or free storage ashore.

Private ads work for boats well priced and in demand however

In France the important thing is to have a mooring available to a new owner. If you have that great and if not you need to take her back to England.

I am sure people spend the winter thinking about a boat for next year, so I wouldn't worry about putting her on now.

The continental boat shows are going on now, so the interest is there.

im selling mine at moment, got 6 months free stowage at woodrolfe in tollesbury, thats on brokerage. problem is ive bought the next one already now i got two headaches. you must bring it home to sell.

But not all people are the same.....

whilst some might spend the winter thinking of next year, others prefer to get their 'new' boat earlier so they can spend the winter fettling. Yet others may like to do some winter sailing.

If Mary (Brownsox) wants to sell before spring, I can't see she's got aything to lose by advertising now.

I sold my last boat on the RGuadiana in Dec, and delivered it for the new owner to the uk in Feb, so I don,t think there is "A" time. Someone may fancy a weekend in France in Jan!

Re: Best time to buy a boat?

It amazes me, although in other walks of life I've been as culpable as anyone else, that people seem to wait until spring arrives, almost as though they doubt it'll happen until they actually experience it, and suddenly decide to lash out what's quite likely the second biggest lump of money they'll ever spend, as though the notion of going sailing had never occurred to them before. But that seems to be what happens.

...which is a roundabout way of inverting the query to 'What's the best time to buy a (used) boat?' Even leaving aside issues of bouancy of market, surely autumn is best, so you have an entire winter's poking around, finding the faults, even horrors, and putting them right. The alternative, to a greater or lesser extent, is putting to sea in a poke.

No 3pm is better after a good lunch time session in the pub /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

we bought Tigger in November: pleanty of time to try her out and iron out the major bits of maintenance. I woudl not want to get a boat in Spring and be spending time and money at a time when I'd rather be sailing

Speaking as one who has just sold and busy looking for a replacement I would agree with the correspondent above - buyers don't suddenly come out of the woodwork on the first day of spring!

A well presented, sensibly priced boat will sell at any time.

Cheers
