I don't have access to almanacs and stuff right now, but need to make provisional plans for a few boats to visit ALderney next July.

Assuming HW CHerbourg is 0800/2030 what is the best time to approach Alderney from the North, ie having crossed the channel (during the day)?

Similarly, assume HW Cherbough is 0930, what is the best time to leave Alderney to head East to Cherbourg?

I can make a few guesses but would prefer help from those what knows.

My pilot says you can catch a west-going eddy of tide close inshore along the N coast of the Cotentin peninsula by leaving Cherbourg at 3 hrs before HW Dover. Alternatively go a bit further offshore and leave Cherbourg in time to pick up the main west-going stream which starts at HW Dover.

The approach to Alderney from the North is pretty open. The only concern is that because of the strength of the tides you should plan to arrive up-tide of the harbour.

Thanks Snowy.

You remind me of a member of our club who refers everything to Dover, even a trip from the Solent to Poole. He confuses the hell out of most of us who prefer using Portsmouth around the IOW, and Cherbourg for channel crossings - primarily because my Channel tidal stream atlas is based on Cherbourg.

Presumably you reference Dover to use the tidal chartlets in the almanac?

Jimi, thanks I am sure your facts are 100% correct, except that I only knew HW Cherbourg, not St Helier. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Are you stupid or what .. I took the trouble to get the info from Reeds and gave you the offset for Dover. If you cant get from Dover to Cherbourg HW then you're even thicker than you look. I certainly was'nt going to take time off from my busy posting schedule to work it out for you. It ain't rocket science you know! Alternativel you could just call the Harbor Master on the VHF when you get close and ask him what to do.

OK, I admit it - I am not as intelligent as I look - I dont know the difference between Dover and Cherbourg off the top of my head.

I will go home tonight and memorise all the offsets in the English Channel so I dont need clog up Scuttlebutt with a yachtie question, next time I am thinking about something in the office !

Or to put it into your vernacular - A Wayne Foque.

Cheeese ... Cherbourg is -3 ref Dover, EVERYBODY with any nautical knowledge knows that. Mumble mumble mumble .. where do they come from these days?

huh. I was drinking with somebody on Friday evening who told of a trip from Cherbourg back to the Solent and they ended up in a F8 off Cap de Hague. They obviously failed to take due notice of the tides..... skipper called himself a Yachtmaster too.

Oh.....just remembered ...... it was you ..... mumble mumble mumble, yerself.

This sounds like another BigNick scam to me. On the Friday evening in question, he managed to sink several rounds of drinks without having a penny to his name. And they say the Scots are careful with their money..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Traditionally? At dawn.
In this case in the dark, with Salcombe Lecher painted out and a selection of courtesy flags to hand.
