hi,

just a quick question. does anyone have any advice for ther best timber to use from which to build a new fin keel. this is to go on a kestrel 22 center board sloop. i have just removed the old keel and the old timbers appear to be oak and are not reusable due to damage and soft areas. if i use oak, would i be better using green unseasoned oak or seasoned timber? or would i consider elm or iroko if i can obtain it? all advice gratefully received /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

You won't find elm, which is not ideal anyway as it is best kept wet.

Iroko would be probably the best choice.

If using oak for any purpose other than steamed timbers use seasoned oak; green oak tends to rot (but the steaming seasons it).
