When I had my last but one boat surveyed in Essex, I had a fantastically thorough surveyor named David Tucker, who spent a whole day from dusk till dawn on the boat, then came on the sea trial the next day and spent the whole two hours checking everything underway, running engines at a whole range of rpm etc., and refused to be distracted by idle chit chat.

The current boat, I used a well known south coast surveyor, who spent about 4 hours looking over it, and then spent most of the sea trial chatting to the broker. Now I haven't had any real problems with the current boat, so I guess he did his job, but I can't help thinking that if there was a hard to spot problem lurking somewhere, the previous surveyor would have been more likely to spot it.

So, i'm about to buy a boat in Lymington, who's the David Tucker of the Solent, anyone know?

Duncan Saunders and Hugo Morgan-Harris of Saunders Morgan-Harris have both been highly spoken of on here, as being both thorough and pragmatic. I have no experience of Duncan, but Hugo did the survey on my boat when he still worked for CE Proof, and did an extremely thorough job. He also put up with me being there, and talked everything through with me as he went. Top bloke.

I also used Simon and found him thorough and happy to have a prospective owner hanging around. He spent a full day on our 25' Maxum which is very thorough considering it's size/complexity - you should have seen the number of holes he scrapped in the antifoul /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Whatever they quote you, I will do it for half the price, cash in hand. I am sure I can wonder round and poke a screwdriver in the hull a few times.

I am not doing it dusk till dawn though - would prefer to make use of the daylight! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Seriously, let me know if I can do anything from here.
