I've just bought a 1983 Farr 30 trailer yacht, and its only electronic instrument is a STW log. As I’m mainly a single-hander and eventually (ie. when I've cleared the mortgage) I'd like wind and STW/log that will interface with a tiller pilot to autosteer by wind, give VMG, etc.

I lashed out on the ‘Entry level' Tactic package for my last boat, solely so I could remove the wind transducer easily for towing, and love it except that it’s rather fiddly and costs another $600 for the NMEA interface here, and I don’t want plugs at both ends of the mast to remove sender for towing.

I like the look of NASA (http://www.nasamarine.com/products.php?cat=Clipper) because they’re less than half the cost of other instruments, and their displays are great for the visually challenged (I once put us aground by reading the water temp as depth in feet!), but I don’t think it gives true wind as neither that nor VMG are mentioned in their blurb (not heard back from them yet).

So has anyone got ideas on the best combo currently available, preferably with removable masthead wind unit and where to get it, please? Thanks, David.
