Whats everyones opinion of the best Winter anchorage in the Solent?

For deep water, Newton gets my vote. Beaulieu nice but exposed to wind.

Newton Creek, seconded.

Also in winter you should find room to anchor in Keyhaven entrance.

Or behind Calshot Spit.

Or on the hard, warm and safe for the winter!!! Fareham is very safe and sheltered but a fair way from teh entrance.

Not exactly the Solent but Chichester Harbour should be safe enough.

The bar, the bar!!!! Tell 'em Tome, the bar is no big issue except in a Southerly blow on the ebb above a F5. The biggest problem coming in over Chi Bar is in the summer with moboers coming too close at speed. Absolutely NO mobo owner on this forum would EVER be guilty of that! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Totally agree ... had no problems bringing my 30'er in under sail with a full ebb and F5 southerly a couple of years back ...
the best bit about it is that everyone else thinks it is too tricky ...

Thanks for that. Taking some people out who are new to sailing and there is a push to spend a night on the hook. Just wanted to get everyones opinions on where was best to go at this time of year. Although I will try to push hard the idea of a calm marina, warm pub and a cold beer.............

I'd push the idea of the Folly. You should be able to moor alongside the shore pontoon at that time of the year (subject to draft) and the pub is a short stagger up the gangway.

If they want to sit at anchor for a while, plan your day to include a lunchtime stop at Newtown (p'raps go Cowes - Yarmouth or vice versa) or Beaulieu.

Best of both worlds - anchor at the Folly. Convenience of a pub nearby and can sling your hook just south of the moorings on the western side of the Medina just before you reach island Harbour.

I'm glad you said that.

Which leads me to my suggestion of the best anchorage in the Solent, which is chust outside 'The Jolly Sailor', at Bursledon.

You could always go just past the piles at Bucklers Hard and pick up a residents mooring. There will be loads vacant now. Just use your dinghy to get to The Masterbuilders Arms. However, whatever you do, don't eat there! ;-)

I agree about not eating at the Master Builders. They have turned serving absolutely disgusting food into a fine art!

Now the Folly is much much better. Nice atmosphere nice staff and eatable food.

All IMHO of course..
