Hi,

I am looking for somewhere to keep my boat in the med, the requirements are:

Easy access to airport,
Pleasant sailing,
Lively town year round.

Anyone got thoughts or ideas? I guess it will probably be somewhere in France or Spain....

Thanks.

Benelmadena and Denia (in Spain) meet your requirements.

Check out the charts for where you can sail to/from re Benelmadena.

From Denia, Altea, Calpe marinas then day sailing is very pleasant with bays and other marinas for lunch. Unlike UK then local marinas don't charge for visiting yachts to moor up for a couple of hours for lunch

If you're not interested in the ex-pat scene: Trieste. There are marinas here or at Monfalcone (10 minutes by car to the airport; daily Ryanair flight to Stansted). Cold in winter, though. One of the marinas in Monfalcone will cost you about euro 1600 for a 10m boat, in Trieste euro 3,480 (but you're right in the city centre). Have a look at the links on my site, below.

(1.) Rome; mooring in the river Tevere (not marina) will cost you about £800 a year for a 10m boat; 10 mins by car to airport; buses into Rome.

(2.) Rome; marina, cost about euro 5000 a year for 12m boat; 10 mins from airport by car; buses/metro into Rome.

(3.) Nettuno; marina costs about euro 5500 for a 10m boat; one hour train into Rome, another 45 mins to airport; Nettuno is lively in summer and a normal town with bars restaurants in winter, pub with Youngs beer 5 mins from marina !!!

(4.) Civiteveccia; marina costs about euro 4800 for a 10m boat; 30 min bus ride to Civiteveccia then 1+ hour train to Rome then 45 mins to airport; marina remote from everything and difficult withouit a car/scooter.

Living in Italy is generally cheap but marina berths are not !!!!!!

How times have changed!! 10 years ago staying for winter was free!!!But then so were other ports in Elba that were far nicer!!

I liked Civiteveccia although rather drab (If any Italian town can be so described)had good simple places to eat a good market and very useful/helpful commercial boat yard the owner either being English or speaking perfect idiomatic English?I never asked him but always ment to!(10 years ago that was!)

As Alan says places in Italy are not cheep these days, you could ask in Salerno? There the prices may be reasonable compared to other places??Im only being hopeful as there are so many boats there i cant imagin they would support the price increases found in private ports???Or would they? I was there last in 2001 how time flys?

Marinas around Marmaris,Turkey.Great weather, food, people,BA flies to Dalaman Airport direct. But best of all you can berth a 12 meter boat for around 2000 Euros electric and water included.
Plus nowhere in the Med has better sailing than Aegean Sea.
