best place to buy leisure batteries online?

I can recommend Performance Leisure

http://www.performanceleisure.co.uk/

I have just purchased 3, arrived next day very well packed, at a very good price. All fully charged showing 12.8 v.

I had a small query so phoned up. Instant answer and then ordered over phone giving requested delivery instructions which are virtually impossible online.

Incidentally, be aware that not all leisure batteries are equal. Some only quote 100 cycles to 70% discharge, others 200, 250 and 500. Watch out for those which have reversed terminals, unless of course that is what you want.

Thanks,

Actually I need reversed terminalx , positive in the front right position (bloody French boat), and all of these on line guys only seem to offer the opposite. Anyone know where I can get

2 x 110 ah flooded reversed terminals deep cycle batteries on line and delivered to Wales? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

oop hang on these are sealed, I was going to buy flooded as all the articles I've read imply that flooded is best performing when is comes to charging etc

I'm happy with sealed: the only disadvantage I can see is that if you do have a faulty charger or alternator that cooks (overcharges) them: once boiled off, you can't top em up.

Advantages of sealed over cheap'n'cheerful flooded are better performance, you can't spill the acid etc.

Heavyweight true deep cycle batteries aren't sealed, but these are different beasts altogether (trojans etc.).

Hi, do you think sealed is the way to go for a starter battery as well.

I am about to fit a new starter battery and will also replace my leisure batteries. My charge has to be set to either lead open, sealed or gel for the entire banks, I guess so it delivers a consistent trickle charge and appropriate boost levels. Therefore I need to decide now which way to go as I can't mix them with this charger.

Do you think setting the charger to boost is relevant to battery life as this is where they would seem to get stressed or boiled?

All these batteries and systems are a compromise!

Ideally you'd have proper deep cycle batteries for the domestics, and truck batteries to start the engines. But, where to store all these batteries on a small boat? And the complexity of wiring / charging systems required to keep them going? And the costs of buying quality deep cycle batteries in the first place?

So instead, what tends to happen is that we:
- do the research, looking at all the exotic battery types and brands
- figure out exactly what we need
- total up the costs
- say "I don't think so" and end up buying cheapish flooded or sealed leisure batteries that do everything reasonably well

The "sealed" setting on your charger is probably just a lower charging current so the electrolyte won't fizz away.

As to overall life, not letting them discharge too much is the main factor: and if they do get discharged, don't leave them that way for any length of time!

Hmm, I agree with this approach, what I find confusing is that batteries that are sold as deep cycle also have CCA quoted as well, I thought that a deep cycle battery was totally unsuitable as a starter battery and vice versa. I am of course talking about cheaper leisure batteries though.

Deep cycle batteries aren't normally used as starter batteries because of the weight & cost compared to a starter battery with the same CCA.

Starter batteries can get high CCA's from a compact light-ish package, by having thinner plates (hence greater surface area). Thinner plates is not good for deep cycling.

Most leisure batteries are somewhere in between.

Thanks

Not a recommendation because I've only just found them but these people quoted me £100 for a 200Ah battery with 12 months warranty or £150 with 36 months warranty compared to best price I've found for 230Ah of £220 (£269 on the Tayna website). I understand the batteries I've been offered are unbranded. Anyone care to offer an opinion on whether that matters?
