Hi

I will shortly be looking for a boat to sail me around the world. I am interested to know if there are particularly good locations in Europe for buying such as boat (ie. do some areas have more, or are they cheaper in some areas)?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

If you intend to sail around the world, does it matter where you start? If not, I would and I am looking in the states, the boats are cheap and mainly well equiped. You get a lot for your £/€ in the USA right now.

the UK is the most expensive place in europe but if you're looking for a used boat at a good price, europe isn't the best place to look. the best bargains are to be found at places where dreams fade. anywhere boats gather to start ocean crossings have collections of boats whose owners have ducked out of the 'big trip'. the canaries and panama are known for it.

your best bet is an international brokerage. in the multihull world there are several uk-based brokers who have listings from all over the world and i'm sure you can find a monohull equivalent if you're set on a half-boat /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was lead to beleive that gibraltar was a good place to look as alot of people get that far and then decide its not for them.

Not advertising for them but there is boatshed.com or solboat.com in that area.

I feel that boats are cheaper elswehere than europe though.

The USA and the West Indies - are cheap - lots of web sites. After that so is New Zealand and Australia but if you are following the trade winds route then you will have missed the best bits - without being sycophantic the boat search on this site is good - so is Apollo Duck - and Boats and Yachts for sale - they all list boats WWide. East Coast USA from Lauderdale to Annapolis is full of boats for sale which are suitable for long distance cruising..

Portugal are some of people who gave up, and you could try 7knots.com to find a boat there.

Hi

New Zealand is a good start. Many choose to finish their cruise here as it is the end of the 'milk run'.

41' Formosa with all gear at present $185,000 NZ. Take a bit off and youve got a good boat for 50,00 GBP.
