Pity there is no way to look inside the various offerings to compare!

They don't have bookshops in Lancashire, then?

:) Ok, bit cheeky as your average branch of Waterstones probably isn't going to stock a full range of pilot books. You don't have a chandler nearby that sells them?

I have the Shell Channel Pilot which will cover the whole of the South Coast; not sure what the equivalent would be once you get round the corner. However, I also have more local books for the Solent and the West Country.

It really depends how much detail you need. For a delivery trip, making long legs and stopping only in large well-known ports, Reeds is probably all you need. Whereas for pottering around one area visiting small and little-known places, you need the most detailed pilot book and ideally some local knowledge.

Aye lad, plenty!! the books all have sealed plastic covers!!

Although this is mainly for a one way holiday trip I really would like plenty of detail to be able to visit the less well known places and for emergency planning!

We cruised widely over the Irish Sea for many years and owned very few pilots. Local ones for Anglesey & North Wales and the Scilly Isles, both the Irish ones (south-west and north-east) and the CCC ones for Scotland. I did have a very dated one for the IOM, long out of print. There isn't all that much between them, which these days I guess you could find on-line before departure.

I have not seen the Rainsbury Irish Sea pilot but I have read several reports of inaccuracies in it.

Thanks Guys, yes, I have 'visited my harbour' !! but there are quite a few ports not covered there. I have been doing my 'armchair planning' using what I can find on the internet and compiling a paper 'file' to use on the boat. It all gets a little 'bitty' and I wondered if it was just better to fork out and try to get comprehensive data in one place and in a consistant format. I have the CCC info from when we were based up there and it was great.
Thanks again
