Best Pilot Book(s) for Western Scotland

I support the CCC Sailing Direction ('cos I'm a member - and they're good) but I also have the Imray Directions too.

Some people (including me) feel that the Martin Lawrence (Imray) directions tend to put people off visiting some anchorages (here there be dragons). On the other hand they have a different take on the approaches/hazards/shoreside facilities.

With either - you wont go far wrong.

True. My 1956 West Coast of Scotland Admiralty Pilot book makes anchoring my warship dead easy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously, the plates showing headlands and landscapes are excellent.

Wouldn't go anywhere without an Admiralty Pilot book

designed for commanding tankers and large grey vessels!!!...not ideal reading for grubing up into a little hole surrounded by reefs with 2 meters of water below the keel!!!

Without doubt the CCC directions are second to none....would not be without them in these west coast waters.

Well, if you have only the 19th century editions that's what you get, but since they revamped them all in the 1980s they cover every crook and nanny very well

Agreed! We carry the Tenth Edition 1958, of the West Coast of Scotland Pilot, in our bookshelf, and for fun, we love going back and reading the chapter “Outlying islands between Jura and Seil Island”, studying the minute details of shoals and rocks, and reading again about exactly where they think all the eddies and overfalls are in the Gulf of Corryvreckan…

We carry other books, as others mentioned; but like most areas of the world, we find the most fun is provided by careful studying – and reading – of a close-in scale Admiralty chart…

Best wishes

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. All right, it's aimed at supertankers but at least its free. Look for publication 141.
