hello folks - for those of you who have crossed thd North Sea, may I ask your advice please?

Has anyone used this & found it worthwhile
http://www.amazon.co.uk/North-Sea-Harbours-Pilotage-Calais/dp/0948788216

Or is this the only worthwhile candidate
North Sea Passage Pilot - Brian Navin

The trip I need to make is Den Helder to Calais then across to Dover and westwards along S. coast

If someone has one of the above for sale please PM

Thanks!

Thanks.

As I'm planning on staying on the coast from Den Helder to Calais, and not crossing the North Sea, but crossing Calais - Dover, I was thinking that "North Sea Harbours and Pilotage: Calais to Den Helder" by Jack Coote / Edward Delmar-Morgan would be enough.

However after doing a little digging the latest edition I can find seems to be published in the 80s

Sailorman have you had an opportunity to use it recently? I suppose it must be showing its age by now

Still, for £0.47 on Amazon I think its worth perusing in an armchair if not on board

If anyone wants to offload the 2013 edition of the Nevin book please PM

we spent 6 weeks in The Nethrerlands in June July this summer & didnt use either ( we have been there many times). get the Dutch coastal chart folio

The right charts and Reed's almanac will suffice. I wouldn't brother with a pilot unless I was intending to spend time in the area.

You beat me to it Johnalison
+1
It's not often that anyone has said that to me.

Some people like to have everything well prepared for a cruise or journey and others like me just muddle along. Far be it for me to discourage anyone from their natural inclinations, but on the whole I find pilots unrewarding. We have bought pilots, often expensive, for areas from the Channel to the Baltic, and the trouble is that they are often incomplete, missing the nice small places, and go out of date very quickly.

My favourite pilot is a very old harbour guide for the Baltic. It has no photos, just drawings and harbour plans. The last thing I want is expensive glossy photos, especially, those silly aerial views. When I go somewhere, I want to discover it for myself, so charts, plans and some relevant information about special hazards and tides are all I need.

and particularly as this seems to be a one off trip -------- you're right about the guides etc. they are difficult and expensive to keep up to date.
