I have just used my trailer to launch my 17' boat and wish to give it some tlc over the summer(??) before retrieval time. There are spots of rust but nothing too dramatic. In addition to the usual greasing I want to give it a repaint with a good protective paint. Any suggestions please as to the best paint to use ?

If it's made of hollow sections, it really doesn't matter what you paint it with - it'll go from the inside. If you still want to paint it, a lot depends on whether you're prepared to take it back to clean, bare, metal or not. If there's any paint already on it, you'll be limited by compatibility. If there's no paint but surface rust (of the non-flakey variety), you could try some Rust-oleum Combicolour. I've just re-done a road-trailer ion that. It says you can apply it direct to the rust. POR 15 is also quite good but it'll probably be cheaper just to build another trailer (and it doesn't like sunlight)! A zinc-rich primer is sometimes good (like Zinga or Galvafroid) but I think they require removal of all existing paint and rust. Also search for Aquasteel - which seems to go direct on to non-flakey rust.
