Hi guys,

Just contemplating changing my Fairline Targa 37, I haven't found a replacement boat as yet but have a good idea of what I want and have seen many boats for sale that fit the bill, what I'm not too sure of is the best form of approach ? As she has just been serviced, anti-fouled, fully polished and looking her best I'm thinking of putting her on the market and testing the water.
What I'm not sure of is the best way of doing this, Private add ? Use a broker and pay commission ?

Any advice much appreciated..

There isn't a "best" way. If you are serious about selling then plan your sales campaign depending on whether you can do it yourself or whether having a specialist or local broker do it for you. Just advertising to test the market is unlikely to do anything for you except cost you money. The real work is in turning an enquiry into a sale so whatever you do you need to be in a position to respond, show off your boat to potential buyers and negotiate the deal.

Sorry guys the boat is in Portimo Portugal.

do you know someone that can let people view the boat?(I take it you are in the UK)

ebay is a good way to get viewers, place the listing get the viewers and pull the listing before it finishes so it works out free

selling by remotre control from the UK you are surely best off with a broker with a local presence to handle everything
Sold mine in Greece listed with one of the biggest international brokers but with no office at the marina where boat was berthed. they didn't even get a single viewing or enquiry. Local on-site small broker had enquiries from the outset and achieved a good sale.

A few years ago (before the credit crunch) I tried to sell a Targa 48 in the south of France and despite advertising it through a couple of active local brokers including the local Fairline broker at the time, I got no bites at all. After several months, I got fed up and arranged to put the boat on a truck to the UK where I sold it very quickly. IMHO, British boats sell best in the UK and this is especially the case now with the Med market still being depressed and the UK market showing signs of life. If I was you, I would be investigating ways of getting your T37 back to the UK and at this time of year you might get a cheaper return load price from one of the truck companies. Even if it costs you say £8k to get her back, you could easily get that back and more by selling at a fair price here compared to a giveaway price in the Med and thats if you find a buyer out there. Just an idea but worth thinking about IMHO. Maybe talk to somebody like Essex Boatyards and see what they think
