Rather general question, but for your average leisure boating purposes, which brand of marine electronics is the best? I know individual radar, gps, chartplotter, autopilot etc have their pros and cons, but considering it as an integrated unit, which is the best in terms of reliability, ease-of-use and performance? I mean, maybe a certain brand of radar, sonar, gps etc may be better than another, but how well do they function together as an integrated system presented to you on their display screens? Which is the best? Raymarine? Garmin? Simrad? Furuno? Or another brand?

I think you will find that those you mention are all good in their own right, its down to personal preference, i.e. some have easier menu's than others, some have unique functions and displays that are desirable. A bit like saying which is best, Princess, Fairline or Sunseeker, they are all good but different, yet ultimately do the same job, get you from A to B on the water. I would advise you to go to a few dealers and spend some time playing with the different models and menu's to see what appeals to you. Which ever you buy it should give you good service.

To me the two contenders are Raymarine and Garmin.

Personally I find Garmin simpler to use.

I had a reliability issues with Raymarine, but they replaced the mother board in a 5 day turnaround and then it was fine.

Raymarine use custom connectors which is a cost / hassle consideration.

I thought it was owned by FLIR ?

I meant British in the same way that Jaguar Land Rover is British, and Princess and Sunseeker are British, ie. the core of operations and product design and development is here. In terms of economic benefit, ownership is less relevant I think. I thought that was still the case for Raymarine, but happy to be corrected if R&D and design has move to the US.
