I'm talking about the sort of hose one might use for drains/inlets, 3/4 inch to 2 inch sizes.

Is there a better or best type as I've found that many are poorly reinforced, go hard with age, difficult to clamp and so on. Any opinions?

The best I have used are black rubber with a spiral wire molded in, with a blue line on the outside. Smooth inside and out, easy to clamp, non-collapsible and pretty flexible. I have used this for engine hoses as well as sink drains. For below waterline I use the clamps (AWAB) that are not perforated so they do not cut into the hose.

I stay away from any non smooth hose as it is tough to clamp properly.

I was sold Vetus hose for a toilet waste and it seemed to be the dogs danglies. A long term live aboard I met at the time said he wouldn't consider anything else for hoses.

Toilet waste hoses are a special case - the best are designed to not be odor permeable.

Agreed.... But if it is good for toilets, it would be great for drains etc. - wouldn't it?

Given the short lengths usually required for this sort of thing, the extra cost would be relatively small.

Replaced my heads inlet hose, less than a year old, because of splits and leaks. Local marine fixing guy suggested Vetus. Most impressed with the hose, and worth the extra. Wished I'd gone that route to start with and not wasted money on the other.

Vetus hose for heads inlet and outlet, galley drains and deck drains. lovely to work with and takes a small radius bend with no trouble. Worth the cost. Dont forget to fit new ss clips. Only slight drawback watch the ends of the reinforcing wire after cutting.
