I need a standalone GPS with a decent anchor alarm. I don't want to have all the main nav systems switched on all night (draws too much juice) so it need it's own internal (or remote with a cable) antenna. And I've not brilliant hearing so it needs a decent buzzer! Does anyone know of a system which will output a flashing light warning as well?

My old Furuno GPS has a reasonable Anchor Alarm. No flashing lights tho.

Its current draw is not huge, as it just runs an LCD screen.

I switch off my chart plotter that the Furuno GPS feeds, as it does use quite a lot of power.

I also use a hand held MAgellan GPS, wired into the ships 12v supply. But the alarm is very quiet, and I'm a bit mutt and geoff as well /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Good luck

I've used a hand held Garmin in our cabin and leave it beside the window at night so it has reasonable reception with the built-in antenna. Loud enough to wake us and runs off its own AA batteries but usually a 12v cig socket with the AAs as backup. (eg Gps 72, Gps 76, GpsMap 76Cx, etc, all run off 2 x AAs batteries or from 12v car cig lead). Has worked a treat thus far allowing me to sleep easy.

I too power off the main nav gear at night and when not underway.

Yes. I use an old but still current GPS76 model (ie mono non plotter). The 76 as oppsoed to the 72 has the option of connecting a windscreen sucker remote antenna. When you set the Anchor drag alarm you can set a movement threshold based on how much you anticipate she will swing over night (ie tide turning or change of wind direction)

We have bought and used a Garmin GPS 60 as an anchor alarm this year. We sleep in the forepeak and I have it against the hull side about a foot from my head. From there, to my surprise, it picks up all the satellites and certainly wakes us when the tide turns. We set the distance so that occurs. The batteries last 28 hours (2AA) but I use a lead to a 12 volt socket run off the lighting circuit.
