Fed up with dropping tools, screws and nuts etc. into the oily bilge water under the engine and consequently having diesel stinking fingers after fishing for them, I now have the ultimate solution. Diesel floats on water so a standard bilge pump will never remove it as it qualifies as "dregs".

Wickes sell a £39 wet and dry vac which performed admirably. It has all the widgets and a really powerful suck. Even found a small spanner in the tank when I emptied it!

Let us know how long it takes the vacuum to stop smelling of diesel!

W&D vacs are great for getting the last bit of water out of a wooden boat when looking for leaks though.

Oily bilge water I reckon a pela oil extractor is the biz, take the mess home and let it settle out.

Here speaketh he who knowest not the reason!

Commissioning the engine- raw water disconnection - bleeding injectors.

But it is also great for saw dust and small solids.

One year guarantee and a steal at that price. Good reviews too.

Still better, I think, to catch the water and fuel before it gets to the bilge. Agreed, though, that wet & dry vacs are useful machines.
