Sparked off by another thread, here's a genuine question....

What d'you reckon are good candidates for 'Best Crab Sandwiches' along the South-West Coast?

The idea is to take Milady for a pleasant day out or three, so within a reasonable morning's drive from Bath, please, unless there is a truly superb B&B next door. The hidden intent is to score a goodly handful of Brownie Points, for later exchange for 'permissions'....

This also could qualify....

The crab rolls at Rockfish in Brixham are divine, come with a superb relish and unlimited chips! The view isn' bad either....

Buy a crab (look for a 3lb + freshly cooked cock crab that's not watery) and make it yourself, use good fresh white bread, proper butter and good mayo, salt and pepper, not too much pepper as it can overpower the crab, I prefer a dash of paprika or cayenne, use mostly white meat and pile it high!

A bought sandwich has never come close to home made.

Theirs a good reason Brixham carpark has a max 3 hours stay... The town is a dump.

Marks and Sparks crab sandwiches from Dartmouth are nice.

The smoked fish platter at Sharpham vineyard, on the Dart, is divine, especially with a cold glass or two of Dart Valley Reserve. Parking there is free and right next door to the cafe. You can then take a walk around the vines or a tour of the cheese dairy. All beside the Dart and massive brownie point scoring.

...or take her to the Anchorstone cafe at Ditsum. Food is brilliant. They did fresh crab sandwiches last time I was there.

Lovely views, from either, and excellent accom to be had nearby.

Although I ought to support Cromer crabs, I have to admit that the juiciest crab I have had was in Penzance, from a sandwich stall by the harbour.

That crab plate in your OP looks to me as though it is worth a lot more brownie points than any crab sandwich!

Yup! And when Milady saw that pic - taken by a friend and fellow-traveller in Camaret recently - she demanded to be taken for a meal of 'chair de crabe'. I reckon it'll be quicker and cheaper to take her to Dorset or the Dart Valley - but I could be wrong!

Whichever way it falls, it's looking like I'm in for an attack of 'angina of the wallet'.

I get fed up with seeing crab recipes/meals/Masterchef that only use the white meat. From now on hen crabs are improving and will be at their best by late September. After all the fuss about discards it should be realised that a lot more crab than necessary is coming ashore to satisfy the demand for white meat and the brown meat gets dumped. One customer this week told me she had never eaten it as she though it was 'poo'. I still get many punters who are terrified of a whole crab, which I sell for £4.50 a kilo, cooked, but will pay £36 a kg for white meat. In a French resto you see the whole family down to les toddleurs tucking into un tourteau.

Rockfish reduced their menu a while back, pretty sure they don't do the crab rolls anymore :(

Oh bother, you are correct they have taken it off their menu- what a pity it was superb! However they did have a great whole crab earlier this week at £20 which looked terrific. As an alternative i suggest 'Claws Indoors' on the quayside at Brixham. Great value crab sarnies and I can vouch for their scallops too.....

If you're still looking for interesting places we were at the Moreton tea rooms yesterday. http://www.moretontearooms.co.uk/content/

It's a lovely setting and there's a very good walled garden in the village, Lawrence of Arabia's tomb, the church where his funeral was held, which has some interesting windows and a ford which is great for kids to go paddling and net fishing. It's also not far from Lawrence's house which in NT owned and, if you're interested, the tank museum.

The crab sandwich was quite good as well.

Just bought 2 cooked Poole Bay crabs, each one more than enough for a long lazy lunch. Grand total of £4!
