I have downloaded OpenCPN to my MacBook Air. The problem now is access to reasonably priced Charts!!!

I looked at Jeppesen but could not determine if their charts are compatible with my Intel MAC.

Can anyone help some more?

For UK waters, you have the superb offering of VisitMyHarbour: http://www.visitmyharbour.com/charts-for-opencpn.asp

40 squids and Bob's your uncle. One of the best bargains in cartography anywhere.

I have and use the "public domain" CM93 charts, 2012 update, but I would certainly not rely on them for primary navigation. For that you really want something more recently updated.

I'm mac user myself - what you need are charts with the .kap ending. You can get some free charts (USA, NZ, Pacific etc)(but not of your area as far as I am aware) which is worth doing just so you can get familiar with how it all works. For sources of free downloads use the openCPN site of course. NVcharts are supplied in .kap format
http://eu.nvcharts.com/index.php?page=categorie&cat=15
and do a pack for Bealerics. You get paper charts plus the digital ones which is a plus in my mind.

Check your local government webpages, particularly ones associated with marine. There may be charts available there in PDF file that if they have Lat and Long they can be calibrated. I do this with Seaclear. The local maritime services sell plasticized charts but have the same charts free in PDF file. They are the most accurate I have found, far better than admiralty charts, only downside is the occasional safety message on them.

What's all this about CM93 charts being public domain? Is there something called CM93 that isn't published by Jeppesen?

The visitmyharbour charts are, AFAIK, windows only. The CM93 charts which many people use with OpenCPN outside areas like the US where the government provide free charts are dodgy downloads of questionable legality. There is a (still in beta) plugin for OpenCPN to support S63 format charts available from chartworld, although frankly those charts are a bit pricey.

This thread seems to have faded at the "O-charts" question from conentrik. Anyone with any further info for OpenCPN charts? I'm interested in Eastern Med. Have 3 year old C-Map for Digiboat's SOB but looking at alternatives.

so the internet isnt public :disgust:

In IP law, "public domain" means that you renounce your copyright on something, permitting anybody to use it for any purpose. You can't even change your mind later, because you're no longer the owner.

Freely giving it to people and telling them they can make copies, as in open-source software, is not public domain because the copyright owner still has the copyright.

Publishing something on the internet, like say a picture on a news website, is obviously not public domain because although people can freely see it, they are not allowed to redistribute it.

Having something which you want to keep proprietary published and copied against your express intention is so far from being public domain that the suggestion is laughable.

(Dockhead's original post used the term sarcastically in inverted commas, which is fair enough.)
