Currently keeping my boat on the west coast of Scotland, where we have a holiday home. The boating is superb, I keep it on Bute and there are a number of marinas/islands/sea lochs to visit...all close by and fairly sheltered going to get anywhere. The scenery is spectacular.

That said, we are toying with the idea of selling our home there and buying something a bit closer to our main home and business in Lincolnshire...(where the boating is quite frankly, cr@p).

Having only really boated around Bute and Lincs, where else is worth considering in your experience?

I sailed from Poole to Scotland all of last year and I would say don't move! As whitelighter says West Country is lovely but the west coast of Scotland is stunning (subject to weather!)

Ok I'll say it if no one else will - The Solent.

Ok it gets a bit busy in the Summer at the weekend, but the choice of destinations within just an hour, let alone a day, is awesome. Even in late July plenty of room most places during the week.

Quite simple
Just move round to the Sound Of Sleat marina at Mallaig without doubt the scenery and destinations cannot be beaten by anywhere else in UK. Would love to have holiday home there!

Base yourself in one of the Plymouth Marinas , great scenery , friendly harbour and marina staff , and best of all even in the Summer never any crowds , turn right ... Fowey ...left Newton ferrers or Salcombe .

Tis exactly what I was going to say, it's the only place that will come close to the West coast of Scotland. Having done my cruising in the Solent area last year, I can honestly say we are so lucky to be in the South West, completely different atmosphere down here. If we only had the weather....but it'll seem sub tropical to you and a good deal milder than even the Thames estuary, (but maybe a little more wind).

Go for Plymouth

Every area of the UK has its advantages and disadvantages.Just case of finding one that suits your idea of "almost" perfect boating.
Must confess that keeping a boat at the other end of the country, or worse still some far distant airport would not be my cup of tea.

Having cruised most of the south and west of the UK and kept boats in Chichester, Plymouth, Falmouth, Port Dinorwic and Conwy, I would say that almost everywhere will be an anti climax after the West Coast of Scotland. Apart, as others have said, possibly from the weather. If I had to choose somewhere else it would be the West Country and Plymouth is a bit nearer Lincolnshire than Falmouth!

Good hunting!
