If I were going to do a one-off trip from NW UK - South and then mainly from the Solent along the south coast, which Almanac would you recommend? Reeds's seems to be the bible but is there an alternative? BTW, I am talking about UK not the Med. However, if there is one that covers down to the Vendee or a little further south please let me know.

Also, initially I want a Nav app for my Android phone. I want it to be simple to download, relatively cheap but sufficient to know where I am. I will be using paper charts as well. I have had a bash with the Navionics free trial and it seemed pretty easy to use. What would you recommend?

Reeds PBO small craft almanac is cheaper than the full Reeds and is A5 size. It covers the channel well and has tide tables for Brest and Pointe de Grave.

Reeds' cover extends down to Gibraltar, so certainly includes the Vendee.

Old skool mobos like us still refer to Cunliffe, aka The Shell Channel Pilot. Where he can go with a deep keel, we can go without one. And he has brilliant informative pics of the way in. Getting out is a lot easier, lol.

+1 for Cunliffe (new edition just out by the look of it) and in addition to the practical info, it's a jolly entertaining read as well in (many) places especially when you can't actually go anywhere! :)

Now not buying the boat I was intending to and so wont get the almanac yet.

Thank for all the advice. I have logged it for future use.
