We are looking to source some new 4 stroke 5hp long shaft outboards. We have used both Suzuki and Honda in the past but I wanted to get some views on the best 4 stroke for the money in this size range.

I use a Merc. It seems to be totally reliable and will plug away all day on tickover (why the previous owner changed from 2 stroke - he parked in a marina with a queue for the lock) and economical (Cherbourg to Xchurch on 12 litres in flat calm and pouring rain) but MUCH noisier than 5hp 2 strokes.

I've got a honda BF5 which came with the boat. It has let me down and I wouldn't have another. Guy on the next pontoon had his on the boat for a week and the ports clogged with salt.

I've had or have Honda, Suzi and Yam 4 st 5 and 6hps.

So far, no probs from any, the Honda probably runs the quietest, but other than that nothing to differentiate their reliability or performance.

My 2003 Suzuki 4 Stroke has been pretty good. One overheating problem and the gear change became stiff. Sorted both out at the same time.

The Suzuki is louder than my mates Honda.

For what it's worth

I have a old Yamaha 2 stroke 6 hp twin and a new Suzuki 4 stroke 6hp single.

When I had to replace the Yam the Yamaha salesman told me his engines are the Rolls Royces of outboards. I agreed with him but as I drive a Ford I bought the Suzuki for £300 less.

Suzuki good, Yamaha better

Good luck with whatever you buy

I agree. I had a Yamaha 4str 4hp and it performed beautifully. It seemed every bit as powerful as the Honda 5hp.
I never had to use it above half throttle on an 18ft yacht. No point as it achieved hull speed at less than half throttle.
It was pretty quiet too.
