berth swaps- any one done it & did the marinas get shirty ??

any one tried a berth swap out from a big marina...ie dean & reddyhoff... & did they try & charge the other vessel in your berth... thoughts & ideas
... I 've a berth that would be vacant in Haslar for whit week - looking for somewhere 1.9 / 40ft on isle of wight...if anyones up for discussing a swap pm me, thx J.

I think (I do not KNOW) you will find that you pay to berth your boat, rather than rent the mooring, so it is not swapable. I would love to be wrong.

I would have thought that most marinas would charge the other boat. I know that Titchmarsh marina charge quite a lot more for an exclusive berth, and, even then, you may not be able to lend it to someone else.

Most T&C's (certainly the ones i've seen anyway) declare the berth 'non transferable', and have a no sub-letting clause too....

My memory of the bad old days when I had a marina contract was that, if I was away for more than a night I was expected to tell the marina for how long my berth would be empty.

They would then sub-let the berth and subsequently pay me a portion of the fees earned. In all the years I was on a marina mooring (Mercury Yacht Harbour), I never received a penny. I was not allowed to sub-let the berth on my own account. MDL, of course, have a berthholders scheme whereby you can 'enjoy' short term stays at other MDL marinas for very little money.

Last marina I was at with such a clause was Gillingham (2001).
I had to be away for a month before I would see any money.

Was away for 7 weeks - revenue for me? - not a penny.
Fellow berth holders told me that our berth was occupied on a fairly regular basis.

Since then I never told 'em I would be away.

I bought the remaining 9 months of a lease from a berthholder who was going away. MDL were quite happy with that but I couldn't extend as they had already let it to someone lese from the end of my tenure. Incidentally it was a hammerhead berth and they charged me flat rate, not the 1.5x or 2x that some marinas require.

When I was in England I asked the Marina why I did not recieve any money from them when they rented my berth whilst I was away, there reply was that visitors fees helped keep annual fees down, check mate.

Premier Marinas are fairly helpful about it - I know a boat that swapped from Brighton to Chichester (and later back again) over a period of a few years.

They also offer a cruising credit if you are away for an extended period - max credit is three months and is applied to the following years charges. We took advantage of this last year for a cruise to Ireland.
