I've tried putting NoSerialMouse and fastdetect into Windows Registry etc to no avail. Running XP Pro.

Any other ideas please?

Many thanks in advance

Are you talking about usb connections or serial? Have you got a GPS connected as well?
It sounds as though you have a mouse and a gps connected via the same serial port and you need to change one of them. If the gps can only use Com1 or 2, try changing the mouse to Com4.
Give us more info on what you have connected, and what interface.

This is a common problem that Win xp detects GPS as a Pointing Device ...
The updates from Microshaft do not fix it ... 3rd party fixes dont fix it ...

The best way is to unplug the GPS ... start up PC and make sure once stable and running plug GPS into exact same port as was installed on. If you plug into another - you will start an install routine again.
On one machine ... I had to let it go crazy ... then unplug the mouse ... use the touchpad to go to Device Manager ... there I then disabled the "Useless" Pointing Device that GPS had triggered to be installed. Then plugged mouse back in and restarted machine.

I have 4 Notebooks running GPS programs ... and each one reacts slightly differently ... you have to find that start-up routine that suits your machine.

It's a USB connection. I have read that Windows sees the GPS as a mouse device and you therefore need to disable it. The laptop connects into a bus into which the GPS is connected. The dongle is also connected to the bus (Maxsea). The only mouse installed is a PS2. Thanks for any help you can provide

Microdaft has this auto detection and installation of mouse drivers. You have to find the offending driver under system and disable it.

But the problem is once it is there, the mouse is berserk.

So boot up with the GPS attached then switch off the GPS (But do not disconnect anything) and look for mouse drivers that should not be there.

The disable is at the bottom of the device properties, under device manager. You are looking for a Microsoft mouse driver only.

Like everyone else has said it is beacause the GPS is being detected as a Microsoft Serial Ballpoint mouse.

You need to start the PC with the GPS on and let the pointer go crazy and then using shortcut keys navigate to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, you then need to go to pointing devices and disable the Microsoft Serial Ball Point mouse and leave it that way, DO Not delete it or you will start the process again.

The simpler way to do this is to use another PC to remote desktop or VNC to it and disable it that way, all depends on how good you are with the shortcut keys.

I do this about 3 times a week on new installs and it has worked everytime

Good Luck
