My dear friend 'A', who sadly passed away in late October left his poor widow, 'J' with the headache of owning a cracking Sparkman & Stephens 'She 32'.

I am pleased to report a minor silver lining to my friends sad passing with the news that a member of this forum, 'T', has purchased her from 'J' and he is I understand over the moon at his purchase, and all are very pleased that 'A's boat has gone to the enthusiast 'A' would have wished for.

The final transaction concluded last week, and the last piece of news was the magnanimous offer by 'T' to place a picture of 'A' aboard his former boat so he will continue to sail in her as she becomes enjoyed by 'T' her new owner.

(names withheld for personal privacy, but those who know 'T' I am sure will wish him well with his purchase).

How kind, and a great contrast with the poster who boasted that, having bought a yacht from a grieving widow with the promise of keeping its name, he changed it before even launching. That evil sod actually seemed to gloat at the distress he had caused.

What a nice outcome and good news story for both your friends. Here's to pleasant voyages.

none of this would have happened without the initiative of Superheat, who posted here initially to try and help his friend's widow sell a much loved family boat.

Sadly, because of adherence to 'rules' the original post was deleted and Superheat received a black mark from the Moderator. :sigh: A kind, perspicacious, and pragmatic YBW forumite then suggested that the same message could be posted on another forum elsewhere in the hope of finding a buyer.

In short, within a matter of days I went with Bilbo to see the boat, which has been loved and cared for beyond imagining. I shook on the deal without ado, and having met the widow, we will be privileged to take with us on board en voyages a photograph of the owner to whom his boat meant so much.

Soppy ? Sentimental ? No. The Polynesians took family objects with them on their great voyages: they called them "Mana" - "good spirit". The previous owner will sail on.

And as a small side point, I took a small gift to the broker who had listed the boat for a while; he held no regrets about the boat being sold privately, and indeed gave a free valuation for insurance . He too felt it was important for the boat to go to the right person. Aspire Brokers, Universal Marina, Hamble, for the record.

The key player is the utterly altruistic Superheat who also supported with precise guidance on the sale process and paperwork. The word "thanks" seems not to be adequate.

Who says that boat forums don't work in magic ways ?

Nice one superheat and sarabande - you are both winners. Pleased to see that good old fashioned values are still with us.
